Diphtheria: Katsina Teaching Hospital Runs Out Of Bed Space

The ongoing diphtheria outbreak in Katsina State has placed severe pressure on the Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina, with a surge in suspected and confirmed cases overwhelming the facility’s Children’s Ward.

The hospital management disclosed on Saturday that it was receiving a large number of patients referred from other health facilities, resulting in severe overcrowding and stretching available bed spaces beyond capacity.

The development has created significant challenges for the hospital as healthcare workers struggle to accommodate the increasing number of children requiring medical attention.

According to the hospital, the rising number of referrals has placed enormous pressure on its Children’s Ward, with available beds no longer sufficient to meet the growing demand.

Despite the shortage, the management said it was making necessary arrangements to accommodate and manage the increasing number of patients while continuing to provide timely and quality care.

Healthcare workers at the facility have also continued attending to critically ill children despite the pressure created by the growing patient load.

The hospital commended the dedication and resilience of its healthcare workers, saying they had remained committed to ensuring that affected children received the necessary treatment.

The management also called for stronger coordination among health facilities and other stakeholders involved in responding to the outbreak.

It stressed that a coordinated approach was necessary to manage the increasing number of patients effectively and protect the lives of children affected by the disease.

The hospital said it remained committed to supporting efforts to contain the outbreak and provide medical care to patients referred to the facility.

However, the management did not disclose the exact number of suspected or confirmed diphtheria cases currently admitted at the hospital.

It also did not provide the total number of cases recorded across Katsina State.
