Delta NDC Governorship Candidate Rejects Monarchs’ Endorsement of Oborevwori
NDC governorship candidate Chris Iyovwaye says the endorsement of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by Urhobo traditional rulers cannot override voters’ constitutional right to choose their governor.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Delta State, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, has rejected the endorsement of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the “sole candidate” of the Urhobo Nation for the 2027 governorship election.
Iyovwaye, in a statement on Saturday, said he respected the traditional rulers but maintained that their endorsement could not replace the electoral process or prevent him from contesting the election.
The Ukoko R’Ivie R’Urhobo, a forum of Urhobo traditional rulers, had endorsed Oborevwori for a second term.
Iyovwaye said the 1999 Constitution vested the electorate with the authority to elect the governor of Delta State through the ballot.
He argued that an endorsement, regardless of its source, could not remove the right of Deltans to choose their leaders.
The NDC candidate also said the governorship should not be determined solely through ethnic consensus, noting that Delta State comprised several ethnic groups, including Urhobo, Ijaw, Itsekiri, Isoko and Anioma communities.
He urged voters to assess the performance and programmes of candidates ahead of the 2027 election, rather than rely solely on political endorsements.
Iyovwaye acknowledged the state government’s reported investments in roads, bridges and other infrastructure but said public spending should be assessed based on its impact on residents.
He also questioned whether the state’s relationship with the Federal Government had produced measurable benefits for Deltans.
The candidate said the 2027 election should focus on performance, accountability, competence and programmes.
He further declared that he would continue campaigning across the state and would not withdraw from the contest.
“I respect our royal fathers. I respect Governor Oborevwori’s right to run. And above all, I respect the sacred right of every Deltan to choose,” he said.
The development follows the endorsement of Oborevwori by Urhobo traditional rulers ahead of the 2027 governorship election. The governor secured the All Progressives Congress ticket for the election after emerging unopposed in the party’s May primary.
