Dangote Refinery Proves Africa Can Build Big Projects — Sanwo-Olu
Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says Dangote Refinery demonstrates Africa’s capacity to deliver globally significant industrial projects.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the Dangote Petroleum Refinery as evidence that Africa has the capacity to execute large-scale industrial projects capable of competing on the global stage.
Sanwo-Olu said the refinery represents a significant achievement for Nigeria and demonstrates what African entrepreneurs can accomplish through vision, investment, innovation and determination.
The governor made the remarks while highlighting the importance of the refinery to Lagos State and Nigeria’s broader economic development.
Located in the Lekki Free Zone, the Dangote refinery has a crude processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, making it one of the largest single-train refineries in the world.
The facility has become a major component of Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen domestic refining capacity, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and improve energy security.
Sanwo-Olu said the project should inspire greater confidence in Africa’s ability to undertake ambitious infrastructure and industrial ventures.
He noted that projects of such magnitude could contribute significantly to economic growth, job creation, technology transfer and industrial development.
The refinery is also expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a major supplier of refined petroleum products to other African markets and beyond.
Since beginning operations, the facility has progressively increased its activities in the domestic petroleum market, while its owners have continued to pursue plans to expand refining capacity.
The project has been widely viewed as an example of the potential of private-sector investment to support Nigeria’s industrialisation and economic transformation.
Sanwo-Olu’s comments come amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government and state governments to attract investment into critical sectors and reduce the country’s dependence on imported goods and services.
The Lagos governor said the scale of the Dangote refinery should encourage other African investors to pursue projects capable of transforming local economies and creating long-term opportunities.
He stressed the importance of building institutions and infrastructure that would allow major investments to thrive while supporting businesses and entrepreneurs.
The refinery’s development has also reinforced Lagos’ position as a major centre for industrial investment, with the Lekki corridor attracting several large-scale projects.
The Dangote project is expected to remain an important part of Nigeria’s energy and industrial landscape as the country seeks to increase local production, expand exports and create more value from its natural resources.
For Sanwo-Olu, the refinery represents more than an energy facility, serving as a demonstration that Africa can build and deliver projects of global significance.
