Dangote Cement Drivers Raise Safety, Welfare Concerns at Ogun Retreat
Dangote Cement drivers at the company’s Ibese plant have discussed road safety, rising living costs and workplace challenges at a retreat, as management reaffirmed its commitment to improving their welfare and promoting safer transport operations.
Drivers of Dangote Cement Plc have raised concerns about road safety, rising living costs, work-related expenses and delays in receiving drug-test results during the company’s 2026 Drivers’ Safety Retreat in Ibese, Ogun State.
The retreat, themed Think Safety, Act Safely, provided a platform for drivers and management representatives to discuss operational challenges, workplace welfare and measures to strengthen safety across the company’s transport operations.
Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement, Arvind Pathak, said the company recognised the sacrifices made by drivers and remained committed to providing appropriate training, equipment and support to improve their welfare.
He said management valued feedback from personnel and would continue to listen to their concerns while investing in safer transport operations.
Pathak urged drivers to prioritise safety over delivery schedules, warning against speeding, fatigue and reckless driving. He advised those who felt tired to stop and rest rather than continue their journeys under unsafe conditions.
He stressed that protecting human lives must remain more important than completing deliveries within a particular timeframe, noting that drivers had responsibilities to their families and other road users.
The company chief added that safer driving practices would strengthen operational efficiency while helping to prevent crashes and protect communities along the routes used by its trucks.
The Aboro of Ibeseland, Oba Rotimi Oluseyi Mulero, also urged drivers to avoid driving while fatigued, emphasising the importance of returning safely to their families after every journey.
Dangote Cement’s Head of Transport, Murilo Silva, cautioned against reckless driving, proxy driving and other unsafe practices that could endanger drivers and members of the public.
He called on personnel to uphold professional standards and take personal responsibility for ensuring safety throughout their operations.
The retreat also featured discussions on the challenges affecting drivers’ working conditions, allowing management to receive direct feedback on issues requiring attention.
As part of the event, eight drivers, four fleet officers and one recipient under the company’s STM category received awards in recognition of their performance and commitment to safety.
The company reiterated its commitment to strengthening its safety culture, improving employee welfare and promoting responsible driving practices across its distribution network.
