Customs Generate N88.9bn, Seize N2.16bn Goods In Kano
Kano Customs records N88.9bn revenue and seizes goods worth N2.16bn amid intensified enforcement and anti-smuggling operations.
The Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, generated N88.9 billion in revenue between January and August 2026, while goods valued at N2.16 billion were seized during the period.
The command said the revenue figure represented a significant contribution to government income from customs operations in the two states.
The seizures were recorded as part of intensified enforcement activities aimed at preventing smuggling, protecting legitimate businesses and ensuring compliance with import and export regulations.
The seized items comprised various categories of goods intercepted by customs officers during patrols, inspections and other enforcement operations across the command’s area of responsibility.
The command said its officers remained committed to combating activities capable of undermining the economy and depriving the government of legitimate revenue.
It also stressed the importance of collaboration between customs personnel, traders, transporters and other stakeholders in improving compliance and facilitating legitimate trade.
The revenue performance comes amid broader efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen revenue collection and reduce leakages across its agencies.
Customs commands have increasingly combined revenue-generation responsibilities with enforcement operations designed to prevent prohibited and improperly declared goods from entering or leaving the country.
The Kano/Jigawa Command said its enforcement activities would continue, particularly against individuals and groups involved in smuggling and other violations of customs laws.
Officials also urged members of the public to provide useful information that could assist customs officers in identifying smuggling routes and activities.
The command maintained that legitimate businesses would benefit from stronger enforcement because smuggling creates unfair competition for compliant traders who pay the required duties and taxes.
The N88.9 billion generated by the command also reflects the continuing role of customs operations in supporting government finances through the collection of duties and other applicable charges.
Meanwhile, the N2.16 billion worth of seized goods demonstrates the scale of enforcement activity carried out within Kano and Jigawa during the eight-month period.
The command said it would sustain its efforts to improve revenue collection while strengthening border controls and enforcement against customs violations.
It reiterated its commitment to carrying out its statutory responsibilities professionally and urged traders to comply with customs regulations to avoid seizures, penalties and other enforcement measures.
The command’s latest figures highlight the dual role of customs authorities in generating public revenue and protecting the economy through enforcement.
