Cricket: Chukwuonye Relishes Nigeria’s U-19 World Cup Qualifier Triumph

Nigeria’s U-19 women’s cricket captain, Christabel Chukwuonye, has described the team’s qualification for the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup as an emotional and unforgettable achievement.

The Junior Female Yellow Greens secured their place at next year’s global tournament after defeating Zimbabwe by four runs in a dramatic final of the Africa Division 1 Qualifier in Tanzania.

Nigeria posted 98 runs in their first innings before producing a disciplined bowling display to restrict Zimbabwe to 94, with one delivery remaining.

Chukwuonye, who contributed 21 runs to Nigeria’s total, said the magnitude of the victory left her in tears after the final.

The captain praised her teammates for maintaining their composure despite the pressure of Zimbabwe’s late push, saying the players remained united and trusted the plan provided by the coaching staff.

The triumph completed a perfect campaign for Nigeria, who won all five of their matches during the qualifier without suffering a defeat.

Chukwuonye also acknowledged the contribution of the coaching crew and her teammates, stressing that the qualification was the result of collective effort rather than the work of one individual.

Nigeria’s bowling attack played a decisive role in the final, with Usen Peace claiming three wickets, while Jennifer Godwin and Annointed Akhigbe took two wickets each.

Zimbabwe’s chase was led by Salem Museka, who scored 27, while Bethel Zinyama and Nicolette Nyika added 21 and 18 respectively. However, Nigeria’s bowlers maintained their discipline and prevented Zimbabwe from reaching the target.

The qualification means Nigeria will return to the global U-19 stage in 2027, joining South Africa as Africa’s representatives at the tournament in Bangladesh and Nepal.

For Chukwuonye, the achievement represents another significant milestone in her development as a young cricketer. She was also part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup and has continued to establish herself as one of the country’s important players.

She urged the team to view the qualification as the beginning of another challenge rather than the end of their journey.

With the World Cup now secured, Nigeria will have an opportunity to build on its successful qualifying campaign and prepare for tougher opposition at the global tournament.
