Chelsea Sign Argentina Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez From Aston Villa
Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa on a three-year contract, strengthening their goalkeeping department ahead of the new Premier League season.
The 33-year-old World Cup winner joins the London club after six seasons at Aston Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers. Chelsea officially confirmed the transfer on Sunday.
Martinez reportedly moved to Stamford Bridge for around £7.5 million, with the transfer coming after Aston Villa signed Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma.
The arrival of Martinez is expected to increase competition for the goalkeeper position at Chelsea, particularly following questions surrounding Robert Sanchez’s recent performances.
Martinez joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in September 2020 and went on to make 256 appearances for the club. During his time at Villa Park, he became an important figure in the team’s rise under manager Unai Emery.
His Villa career reached another high point last season when he helped the club win the UEFA Europa League and secure a strong league finish.
Before establishing himself at Villa, Martinez spent several years at Arsenal and had loan spells with clubs including Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Getafe and Reading.
His performances at Villa also transformed his international career. Martinez became Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper and played a major role in the country’s success at the highest level.
He helped Argentina win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024 before playing a crucial role in their 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph in Qatar.
Martinez was also awarded the Yashin Trophy at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies, recognising him as the world’s outstanding goalkeeper during those periods.
The goalkeeper said joining Chelsea was an easy decision for him and his family, adding that he wants to win trophies and bring his passion and competitive mentality to the club.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will now have an experienced international goalkeeper available as the club continues preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.
Martinez’s move also marks the end of his successful six-year spell at Aston Villa, where he became a fan favourite and one of the most recognisable goalkeepers in English football.
Chelsea will hope his experience, leadership and ability to perform under pressure can provide greater stability between the posts as they compete domestically and in European competition.
