Chelsea Goalkeeper Martínez Targets Return Within Weeks After Surgery
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has undergone successful surgery for a fractured jaw sustained in a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. The Argentine expects to return within weeks.
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has undergone successful surgery for a fractured jaw following a collision during his side’s 2-0 victory over Everton in the English Premier League.
The Argentine sustained the injury in the second half of Saturday’s encounter at Hill Dickinson Stadium after coming off his line to deal with a free-kick and colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
Medical personnel attended to both players, but Martínez required several minutes of treatment before being carried off the pitch on a stretcher. He was subsequently taken to hospital for further examinations.
Chelsea later confirmed that the goalkeeper had undergone surgery, with Martínez taking to social media to thank supporters for their messages and provide an update on his recovery.
“The operation went well. The most important thing is that we won and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks, we’ll be back,” he said.
The injury overshadowed Chelsea’s victory, which was secured through two goals from Portuguese winger Pedro Neto. He scored shortly after the restart and added a second goal late in the match to give Chelsea all three points.
Martínez’s absence also provided an opportunity for 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders to make his Premier League debut. Penders came on as a substitute and helped Chelsea preserve their clean sheet.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso praised the young goalkeeper’s performance, expressing confidence in his ability to step up when required.
Alonso had earlier said Martínez was conscious when he left the stadium and was undergoing precautionary medical tests.
The extent of Martínez’s injury means he is expected to miss several matches while recovering, although he remains optimistic about returning to action within a few weeks.
Chelsea will have to rely on their available goalkeeping options during his absence as they prepare for their upcoming domestic fixtures.
