Chelsea Confirm Name Change Ahead of New Season
Chelsea rename their youth teams Cobham Next Gen, highlighting the Academy’s focus on developing young players for senior football.
Chelsea have announced that their Under-21 and Under-19 teams will be rebranded as Cobham Next Gen, CNG, ahead of the upcoming season.
The club confirmed the change in an official statement on Tuesday, with the new team set to operate under head coach Harry Hudson.
Chelsea said the new name more accurately reflects the age profile of the club’s leading Academy side and its longstanding focus on developing young players for senior football.
Although the team competed in Premier League 2 as an Under-21 side last season, Chelsea explained that its average age was closer to that of an Under-18 team, with several players as young as 16 featuring regularly.
The club said Cobham Next Gen better represents the squad’s role within the Academy and the stage of development occupied by its players.
According to Chelsea, the group consists of young players approaching the final stage of their development pathway before making the transition to senior football.
The club also highlighted its long history of producing players for the first team through its Cobham Academy.
Current senior players, including club captain Reece James, Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong, are among the graduates of the Academy.
Chelsea noted that numerous other former Academy players have gone on to establish successful careers in English football and leading European leagues.
The club said allowing young players to compete above their natural age group remains an important part of its development strategy.
That approach was demonstrated last season when one of the youngest squads in Premier League 2 finished at the top of the table.
Chelsea said the introduction of Cobham Next Gen was designed to give the group a stronger identity beyond a traditional age classification.
The new name, according to the club, represents players progressing through the Academy and taking important steps towards senior football.
Chelsea also believes the rebranding will strengthen the identity of its development programme while highlighting the opportunities available to young players seeking to progress into the men’s first team.
The club said the initiative reflects its continued commitment to developing talent at Cobham and creating a pathway for promising youngsters to reach senior football.
