Burnley Sign Ex-England Striker Jamie Vardy
Former England striker Jamie Vardy returns to English football, joining struggling Burnley on a deal until season’s end.
Burnley have signed former England international Jamie Vardy on a contract running until the end of the current season, bringing the veteran striker back to English football.
The 39-year-old forward joins the Championship club as a free agent after leaving Italian side Cremonese at the end of last season. Vardy spent the previous campaign in Serie A, scoring seven goals in 29 appearances for Cremonese before departing following the club’s relegation.
His arrival gives Burnley a highly experienced forward as the Clarets attempt to recover from a difficult start to their Championship campaign.
Burnley were relegated from the Premier League last season and have struggled since returning to the second tier. The club currently sits at the bottom of the Championship after collecting just two points from its opening five matches.
Burnley head coach Nicky Hayen said Vardy’s experience and leadership would be valuable to the squad and expressed confidence that the striker could make a significant impact during the campaign.
Vardy, meanwhile, said he was delighted to join the club and praised Burnley’s football history and passionate supporters.
The former Leicester City striker became one of the most celebrated players in English football during his 13-year spell with the Foxes.
Vardy played a key role in Leicester’s remarkable Premier League title triumph in the 2015-16 season, scoring 24 league goals during the historic campaign.
He also helped Leicester win the FA Cup in 2021 and finished as the Premier League’s leading scorer in the 2019-20 season after scoring 23 goals.
The striker earned 26 caps for England and represented the country at the 2016 European Championship and 2018 World Cup.
Vardy left Leicester in 2025 after the club’s relegation from the Premier League, ending a remarkable association during which he scored 200 goals in 500 appearances.
His move to Burnley marks his return to English football after one season abroad.
Burnley will hope Vardy’s goalscoring experience can provide an immediate boost as they attempt to climb the Championship table and revive their promotion hopes.
The veteran forward will also be expected to provide leadership to a squad seeking greater consistency after its disappointing opening weeks of the season.
For Vardy, the move provides another opportunity to continue a remarkable career that began in non-league football and ultimately produced a Premier League title, an FA Cup and international honours.
