Bundesliga: Bayern Fail to Score First Time in 59 Matches
Schalke hold Bayern Munich goalless, ending the champions’ remarkable 59-match scoring streak across competitive football matches.
Bayern Munich’s scoring run came to an end as newly promoted Schalke 04 held the champions to a goalless draw at the Veltins-Arena.
The 0-0 result ended Bayern’s run of scoring in 59 consecutive matches, a streak that had underlined the attacking consistency of Vincent Kompany’s side.
Bayern dominated possession and created opportunities, but Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius produced a performance to keep the visitors off the scoresheet. The former Liverpool goalkeeper made several saves as Schalke defended throughout the contest.
Bayern entered the match after opening their Bundesliga campaign with a 5-1 victory over Stuttgart and were expected to maintain their momentum. Instead, they encountered a disciplined Schalke side determined to frustrate the champions in their first home Bundesliga match since returning to Germany’s top flight.
Kompany made changes to his starting lineup, with attacking players including Harry Kane and Michael Olise beginning on the bench. Bayern generated enough chances to win, but their finishing deserted them.
Luis Diaz appeared to have found a way through in the second half, but his effort was blocked on the goal line. Further opportunities followed, including a chance for Jonathan Tah, but Bayern could not find the decisive touch.
Kompany eventually introduced Kane, Olise and Jamal Musiala as Bayern searched for a breakthrough. Musiala’s return was notable after his fitness concerns, but even his introduction could not unlock Schalke’s defence.
The hosts grew increasingly confident as the match progressed, with their compact defensive shape limiting Bayern’s attackers and Karius commanding his penalty area effectively.
For Schalke, the point represents a boost after their return to the Bundesliga. Having lost their opening league match, the promoted side showed considerable resilience against one of Europe’s strongest teams.
Bayern, meanwhile, dropped their first points of the campaign and will be frustrated by their inability to convert their opportunities. The result also ended their scoring sequence, marking the first time in 59 matches that they failed to score.
The champions will now look to respond in their next fixture, while Schalke can take confidence from a performance that demonstrated their ability to compete with Germany’s elite.
