Bruno Fernandes Reflects on Missed Opportunity to Bring Declan Rice to Old Trafford
Bruno Fernandes admitted he was “sad” after Declan Rice rejected a move to Manchester United in favour of Arsenal FC. Fernandes said he strongly pushed for the signing, believing Rice’s qualities would have transformed United’s midfield and boosted their title ambitions.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has candidly discussed the club's unsuccessful pursuit of Declan Rice, admitting that the midfielder's decision to bypass a move to Old Trafford left him feeling deeply disappointed.
Before his blockbuster transfer from West Ham United to Arsenal, Rice was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, with several senior figures at the club actively advocating for his signature. Fernandes revealed that he was one of the loudest voices pushing for the England international to join the Red Devils, firmly believing that Rice possessed the exact qualities needed to transform United's midfield and elevate the squad into genuine title contenders.
The Portuguese playmaker explained that he went so far as to envision how the two would anchor the midfield together, feeling that Rice’s defensive discipline and leadership would have provided the perfect platform for United's creative players to flourish. However, despite intense speculation and behind-the-scenes interest, Rice ultimately chose a move to North London.
While Fernandes acknowledged that experiencing such setbacks is part of modern football, he didn't hide the lingering sadness of missing out on a world-class talent. He concluded by praising Rice’s immense quality, noting that while it was a tough pill to swallow for Manchester United, the midfielder has fully validated his reputation with his stellar performances since the move.
