Bernardo Silva Succeeds Cristiano Ronaldo as Portugal Captain

Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva has been appointed captain of the national team following Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international football, bringing a new leadership era to the European champions.

Head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed the appointment on Friday, November 6, while announcing his 28-man squad for Portugal’s upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales.

The 32-year-old midfielder takes over the captain’s armband after Ronaldo announced his retirement on Thursday, ending a 23-year international career with the national team.

Jesus explained that Portugal would continue its tradition of selecting captains based on international appearances, making Silva the natural successor because he has the highest number of caps among the remaining players.

Silva has made 115 appearances for Portugal, ahead of Bruno Fernandes, who has 97 caps, Rúben Dias with 84, João Cancelo with 77 and Rúben Neves with 73.

The five players will form the national team’s leadership group, with Silva serving as the first captain.

Jesus praised Silva’s experience and quality, saying the midfielder was enjoying a good period at Real Madrid and had the ability to contribute significantly to the national team.

Ronaldo leaves Portugal as the country’s record appearance holder and leading international goalscorer, with 234 appearances and 146 goals.

During his international career, he captained Portugal to its first European Championship title in 2016 and two UEFA Nations League trophies, in 2019 and 2025.

Silva was also part of Portugal’s 2019 and 2025 Nations League-winning teams, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced players.

His first matches as captain will come against Denmark on November 14 in Braga and Wales on November 17 in Cardiff.

Portugal have already secured qualification for the Nations League quarter-finals and will be seeking to maintain their strong form under Jesus.

Silva’s appointment marks a significant transition for Portugal as the team prepares to move forward without the leadership of one of the greatest players in its history.
