Benue Govt Demands Name of Alleged Aide Who Blocked Obi’s Convoy
The Benue State Government has challenged the NDC to identify the alleged government aide accused of leading youths who blocked Peter Obi’s convoy during his visit to the state.
The Benue State Government has challenged the Nigeria Democratic Congress to name the alleged government aide it accused of leading youths to block the convoy of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The demand followed allegations by the NDC that an aide to Governor Hyacinth Alia led a group of armed youths who prevented Obi from reaching Yelwata, where he planned to commiserate with victims of recent killings.
The party called for an investigation into the incident and accused the alleged group of obstructing Obi’s movement while he was attempting to visit affected communities.
The state government had earlier denied knowledge of Obi’s visit, saying neither the governor nor relevant security agencies were formally notified ahead of his arrival.
Governor Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, said a presidential candidate and former governor should ordinarily have adequate security arrangements coordinated before visiting the state.
He also rejected allegations that the governor would mobilise youths to obstruct Obi, saying the governor did not promote thuggery.
The government questioned the basis for the allegation against the governor’s aide and demanded that the NDC provide the identity of the person it claimed was responsible.
The controversy followed reports that Obi’s convoy was stopped along Boko Road while he was travelling to communities affected by the killings.
Obi said he had travelled to Benue to mourn with victims’ families and offer solidarity, describing the obstruction as unacceptable.
The incident has generated reactions from political groups and civil society organisations, with calls for an investigation to establish who organised the blockade and whether anyone should be held responsible.
The Benue Government maintained that political disagreements should not be allowed to undermine security and public order in the state.
