Barcelona Thrash Elche 5-0 in La Liga Opener
Barcelona began their La Liga title defence in emphatic style, crushing Elche 5-0 in a dominant opening-day performance.
Barcelona launched their La Liga title defence with a commanding 5-0 victory over Elche on Sunday, producing an impressive attacking display at the Martínez Valero Stadium.
Raphinha starred for the Spanish champions, scoring twice, while Fermin Lopez also netted two goals as Barcelona quickly established control of the contest.
The victory sends an early warning to Real Madrid, who began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Espanyol on Saturday. Barcelona’s emphatic performance showed they remain determined to retain the league title.
Raphinha opened the scoring after 14 minutes from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the area by Victor Chust.
The Brazilian forward, who started as Barcelona’s central striker, confidently converted the spot-kick to put Hansi Flick’s side ahead.
Raphinha’s role as a number nine comes after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, leaving Barcelona still searching for another recognised striker.
The Catalan club had reportedly attempted to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, but their bid was rejected.
Raphinha, however, insisted he was comfortable playing anywhere across the attack.
Barcelona continued to dominate after taking the lead, with Elche struggling to cope with the visitors’ movement and attacking intensity.
Fermin Lopez subsequently added two goals to further stretch Barcelona’s advantage, while Anthony Gordon enjoyed an impressive debut, contributing two assists.
Karim Adeyemi also marked his debut with a goal as Barcelona completed a comprehensive victory.
Teenage winger Lamine Yamal started on the right wing but failed to reach his best level following his involvement with Spain during the World Cup. Barcelona’s overall performance, however, ensured his subdued display did little to affect the team.
Defensively, Eric Garcia made several important interventions as Elche attempted to create opportunities.
Midfielder Gavi also attracted attention, although his newly dyed pink hair following Spain’s success became almost as noticeable as his performance.
Speaking after the match, Raphinha praised Barcelona’s display and acknowledged the difficulty of playing away against an Elche side that prefers to dominate possession.
The result gives Flick an ideal start to the new La Liga campaign and strengthens Barcelona’s position as one of the leading contenders for the title.
