Bamanga Tukur To Be Buried Sunday In Adamawa — Family

The family of former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has announced that the elder statesman will be buried on Sunday, September 13, 2026, in Yola, Adamawa State.

Tukur’s son, Awwal Tukur, who is the Secretary to the Adamawa State Government, announced the burial arrangements in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to the family, the remains of the former governor of the old Gongola State will arrive in Yola on Saturday ahead of the funeral rites.

Funeral prayers will be held at the Lamido’s Palace in Yola at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, after which the former governor will be laid to rest.

Tukur died in Abuja on Saturday, September 12, 2026, three days before his 91st birthday. He was born on September 15, 1935.

The family said the late elder statesman is survived by two wives and 18 children, including Awwal Tukur.

Tukur was a prominent businessman, politician and public administrator whose career spanned several decades.

He served as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority between 1975 and 1982 before becoming governor of the old Gongola State in 1983.

His tenure as governor was cut short by the military coup of December 1983.

Tukur later served as Minister of Industries between 1993 and 1995 under the military administration of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

He also held several prominent positions in African business organisations, including serving as President of the Africa Business Roundtable.

Tukur returned to partisan politics and became National Chairman of the PDP in March 2012. He served in the position until January 2014, during a period of significant political activity and internal disagreements within the party.

His death has attracted condolences from political leaders and institutions across the country.

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri declared three days of mourning in honour of the former governor and PDP chairman, while President Bola Tinubu also expressed condolences to the family.

The family has thanked Nigerians and others who have expressed sympathy and offered prayers following the death of the elder statesman.

Tukur’s burial on Sunday will bring together family members, political associates, traditional leaders and other sympathisers to pay their final respects to the former governor and prominent Nigerian public figure.
