Leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has criticised United States President Donald Trump following his Republican Party’s defeat in the midterm elections, describing the outcome as entirely self-inflicted.

Badenoch made the remarks during an interview with The Independent Editor-in-Chief, Geordie Greig, saying Trump had failed to act in ways consistent with conservative principles.

Asked whether the US President deserved the electoral setback, she replied in the affirmative, arguing that his policies and conduct had undermined the political coalition that brought him to power.

She criticised his administration’s tariffs, protectionist trade policies and threats against Canada and Greenland, questioning why the President had abandoned the principles of free markets and improved international trade.

Badenoch also faulted Trump's handling of the Iran war, saying she understood the initial justification for military action because of concerns about Iran acquiring nuclear weapons but questioned the absence of a clear strategy.

She further condemned his public criticism of journalists and political figures, saying his approach did not meet the standards expected of a statesman.

The Conservative leader also expressed displeasure over Trump's remarks about British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and described his treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a meeting at the White House as unacceptable.

She said the special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States should be distinguished from the actions of an individual president.

Badenoch also disclosed that she would have been comfortable if Democratic candidate Kamala Harris had defeated Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

When asked which of the two candidates she preferred, she said she liked them both equally.

The British opposition leader argued that Trump had squandered the broad coalition of voters that supported his return to the White House, including Latino voters and a significant number of Black voters.

She maintained that his decisions on trade and foreign relations had alienated sections of the electorate who had initially backed his campaign.

The Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's midterm elections, dealing a major setback to Trump's Republican Party.
