‘Atiku’s Life in Danger’ — US Lobby Firm Alleges Assassination Plot

A United States-based policy advisory and lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has alleged that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar faces a possible assassination threat, calling for attention to concerns about his safety.

The firm, which represents Atiku in the United States, made the allegation in a statement published on Monday, October 19, according to reports by Daily Post.

The allegation comes amid a prolonged dispute between the lobbying firm and individuals it claims are linked to Nigeria’s political establishment. The firm has previously raised concerns over alleged intimidation and threats against its founder, Karl Von Batten.

Von Batten-Montague-York has been involved in lobbying efforts on Atiku’s behalf in Washington, including engagements with US officials and lawmakers concerning Nigeria’s political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The firm has also criticised what it describes as attempts to intimidate political opponents and restrict democratic freedoms in Nigeria.

The latest allegation has renewed attention on the security of opposition figures as political activities intensify ahead of the next presidential election.

However, the claim of an assassination plot remains an allegation by the lobbying firm. No independently verified evidence establishing that a plot exists was immediately available, and details of any alleged perpetrators or operational plans were not provided in the report.

There was also no immediate official response from the Nigerian Presidency or security agencies addressing the specific allegation.

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s vice-president from 1999 to 2007, remains a prominent opposition figure and has been associated with efforts to challenge the policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The development comes amid an increasingly heated political climate, with opposition groups and government supporters exchanging accusations over governance, political freedom and the conduct of public affairs.

Further clarification from the relevant authorities would be necessary to establish the credibility of the reported threat and whether any formal security investigation has been opened.
