Arteta Slams Penalty Decision in Arsenal Win Over Sunderland
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta criticised the decision to award Sunderland a penalty, calling it unacceptable despite his side’s 2-0 victory.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has criticised the decision to award Sunderland a penalty during his side’s 2-0 Premier League victory at the Stadium of Light.
The penalty was awarded after Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa was judged to have fouled Sunderland’s Dan Ballard during a corner in the second half.
Arteta strongly disagreed with the decision, arguing that Ballard had pulled Konsa and that the incident should not have resulted in a spot-kick.
David Raya then saved Enzo Le Fée’s penalty, pushing the ball onto the post and keeping the score level.
Arsenal took advantage shortly afterwards when Bruno Guimarães opened the scoring with a superb strike from outside the box.
Bukayo Saka later converted a stoppage-time penalty to complete the victory after Sunderland defender Reinildo Mandava was sent off for a second booking.
Arteta, who was also booked during the match for leaving his technical area, said the penalty decision could have had a major impact on Arsenal’s season.
He questioned why the decision remained unchanged after a VAR review, arguing that such incidents should be properly assessed given the technology available to officials.
Despite his frustration, Arteta praised his players for remaining composed under pressure and highlighted Raya’s penalty save as a crucial moment in the match.
The victory maintained Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season, with the defending champions winning all four of their league matches so far.
