Arsenal Thrash Man City 3-0 to Lift Community Shield

Arsenal began the 2026/27 campaign in spectacular fashion, defeating Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Sunday.

The victory gave Mikel Arteta’s side an early opportunity to demonstrate that their Premier League title triumph last season has only increased their hunger for more silverware.

Arsenal needed just 24 seconds to take the lead, with Riccardo Calafiori finishing a swift move to score the fastest goal in the competition in decades. The early strike immediately put pressure on Manchester City, who were playing their first major competitive match under new manager Enzo Maresca.

The Gunners continued to dominate proceedings and doubled their advantage before half-time. Kai Havertz rose to head home and give Arsenal a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.

City struggled to match Arsenal’s intensity and attacking cohesion, with the champions repeatedly creating problems through their pressing and quick movement.

Martin Odegaard then completed the scoring shortly after the restart, adding Arsenal’s third goal and putting the result beyond doubt.

Christos Tzolis was among Arsenal’s standout performers, providing two assists and playing a major role in the convincing victory. The Community Shield also offered Arteta an opportunity to introduce some of Arsenal’s summer additions.

Bruno Guimaraes, signed from Newcastle United for £75 million, impressed in midfield, while Tzolis, who joined from Club Brugge for £34 million, provided an immediate attacking threat.

The result strengthens Arsenal’s status as one of the leading contenders for the Premier League title. The Gunners ended a long wait for the championship last season and will now attempt to become the first Arsenal side in decades to win successive English top-flight titles.

Odegaard said the team remained hungry for further success, with the Champions League also a major target after Arsenal suffered disappointment in Europe last season.

For City, however, the defeat provided Maresca with an early warning about the challenge ahead. His team struggled to impose itself against an Arsenal side that looked sharper, more organised and more confident.

Arsenal will now turn their attention to the Premier League, with Coventry City set to visit the Emirates Stadium on August 21 for their opening league fixture.

The Community Shield victory gives Arteta’s squad an ideal start as they begin their pursuit of another domestic title and a wider collection of trophies.
