Arsenal Beat Liverpool 1-0 to Go Top of the Premier League

Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League table after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute, finishing from close range after Declan Rice delivered a low cross into the Liverpool penalty area.

The goal followed a mistake by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, whose attempted pass from the back was intercepted by Martin Ødegaard. Arsenal quickly turned possession into an attacking move, with Rice providing the final pass for Havertz to score.

Liverpool responded with pressure and came close to equalising before half-time. Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar with a free-kick, while Alexis Mac Allister missed a clear headed opportunity.

The hosts also appealed for a penalty after Jurriën Timber appeared to pull Alexander Isak’s shirt inside the area, but the referee did not award a spot-kick.

Arsenal created opportunities to extend their lead, with Alisson making important interventions to keep Liverpool in the contest. The visitors, however, remained organised defensively and held on to secure all three points.

The victory marked Arsenal’s first league win at Anfield in 14 years, ending a run of 13 consecutive visits without a victory.

The result lifted the defending champions to 24 points from nine matches, three points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton on Saturday.

Liverpool remained fifth on 15 points, nine behind Arsenal, after suffering their second Premier League defeat of the season.

The result gives Mikel Arteta’s side an important advantage in the early title race as they continue their defence of the Premier League crown.
