Army Chief Lists 28,000 Recruitment, 12 Divisions Among First-Year Achievements

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has listed the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions, approval for the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel and the provision of 681 housing units among the major achievements of his first year in office.

Shaibu disclosed this in a message marking his first 365 days as Chief of Army Staff, in which he outlined progress made in strengthening the military's operational capacity, personnel welfare and institutional development.

He said the Federal Government's approval for the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel would strengthen the Army's manpower base and improve its ability to respond to security challenges across the country.

The Army chief explained that the expansion from eight to 12 divisions was aimed at improving territorial coverage, enhancing operational responsiveness and strengthening security in vulnerable communities.

He noted that the developments formed part of efforts to reposition the Army into a more capable, resilient and technologically advanced institution.

Shaibu said his administration's transformation agenda was guided by five strategic pillars: Professional Excellence, Robust Administration, Operational Readiness, Strategic Cooperation and Exemplary Leadership.

He added that the pillars were supported by a Soldier-First Culture, which prioritised the welfare, motivation, dignity and professional development of military personnel.

On accommodation, the Army chief disclosed that 681 housing units had been delivered under the Affordable Home Ownership Option for All Soldiers Scheme.

The units comprise 489 two-bedroom flats and 192 three-bedroom flats, while additional housing projects and renovation of existing military facilities were ongoing.

He described personnel welfare as a command responsibility, urging commanders at all levels to prioritise the living conditions and well-being of officers and soldiers under their supervision.

Shaibu also commended troops serving in various operational theatres across the country for their sacrifices and commitment to tackling terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other security threats.

He paid tribute to personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty and acknowledged the sacrifices of wounded soldiers undergoing recovery.

The Army chief further urged military personnel to uphold professionalism, respect human rights and comply with established rules of engagement while conducting operations.

He recognised the contributions of military families, particularly spouses and children, who endure the challenges of frequent relocations, prolonged deployments and the demands of military service.

Shaibu reaffirmed his commitment to consolidating the Army's operational gains, strengthening institutional capacity and improving its technological capabilities to address the country's security challenges.
