Arbeloa Tips Bassey for Fulham Captaincy
Fulham boss Álvaro Arbeloa says Calvin Bassey has the qualities to become a key leader and captain for the club.
Fulham head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has backed Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey to emerge as a leader at the club ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Spanish coach’s confidence in the 26-year-old defender was highlighted when Bassey wore the captain’s armband during Fulham’s final two pre-season matches against Málaga and Stuttgart.
Arbeloa believes Bassey’s defensive qualities, particularly his ability to operate in space, make him well suited to the tactical approach he intends to implement at Fulham.
The former Liverpool right-back also praised Bassey’s work ethic and personality, suggesting the Nigeria international could take on greater responsibility within the squad.
“I see Calvin as a proper player, a top player for the style of play I want at Fulham,” Arbeloa said after the match against Stuttgart.
He added that Bassey’s ability to defend high up the pitch made him particularly valuable to his tactical system.
“To defend so high with a lot of space in behind, he has everything, and I think he’s a top player,” Arbeloa said.
The Fulham manager also praised the defender’s character and commitment during training.
“He’s a funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one. I really love him, and I want him to be our leader,” he added.
Bassey’s growing influence at Craven Cottage reflects his development since returning to English football after spells in Scotland and the Netherlands.
The Nigerian defender joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023 and has established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defenders.
Last season, he made 30 Premier League appearances, starting 28 of those matches. During the 2024/25 campaign, Bassey was voted Fulham’s Player of the Season after featuring in 35 Premier League matches.
Arbeloa, who took charge of Fulham ahead of the new season, has worked closely with Bassey throughout pre-season and appears keen to expand the defender’s role beyond his responsibilities on the pitch.
Bassey is expected to form part of the experienced core that will help guide a younger Fulham squad, alongside Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson and goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
His recent appointment as captain in pre-season could therefore signal a greater leadership role for the Nigerian as Fulham prepare for the new Premier League campaign.
