The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Yunusa Abu Ishaq, has been killed by gunmen during a kidnapping incident along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway.

Ishaq was reportedly travelling in a commercial vehicle when armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area on Thursday.

The Kogi State Police Command said the incident occurred at about 5 p.m., adding that a blue Toyota Corolla was later found abandoned along the highway.

Police said the driver, identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead inside the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the attackers.

The deceased was evacuated to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy, while security personnel launched a search operation in the surrounding forest to locate the abducted victim and apprehend the assailants.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed sustained operations to secure the affected corridor and bring those responsible to justice.

The command urged motorists and residents along the route to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.

The latest incident comes a day after another abduction was reported along the Aloma–Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area.

Police said gunmen blocked two buses near the Ogene Zaria/Onicha-Igo Junction and abducted several passengers. A joint security operation subsequently rescued 11 victims, including the drivers of the two buses.

Police said most of the rescued victims were National Youth Service Corps members travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja.

Security operations remain ongoing in the affected areas as authorities work to rescue any remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
