Anyone Who Rigs Election Under Me Will Go to Jail — Obi

Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has said anyone who attempts to rig an election under his administration would face prosecution and imprisonment.

Obi made the statement while speaking about electoral integrity and the need to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Anambra State governor said his administration, if elected, would not tolerate electoral manipulation or other practices capable of undermining the credibility of elections.

According to Obi, officials and individuals involved in rigging elections should be held accountable under the law, regardless of their political affiliation or position.

He argued that credible elections are essential to building public confidence in government and ensuring that elected leaders genuinely reflect the choices of voters.

Obi has repeatedly made electoral reform and institutional accountability part of his political messaging, alongside concerns about public spending, insecurity, unemployment and economic development.

He said Nigeria needed institutions capable of enforcing electoral laws without political interference and ensuring that votes cast by citizens are accurately counted and protected.

The former governor also called for greater transparency in the electoral process, including effective use of technology and stronger safeguards against manipulation of results.

His comments come as political parties and potential candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission is responsible for conducting federal elections, while electoral offences are subject to the relevant provisions of Nigerian law.

Obi’s warning reflects his stated position that electoral malpractice should carry consequences for those involved, rather than being treated as an ordinary feature of political competition.

He said the country could not build a stable democracy if electoral processes continued to be undermined by individuals seeking political advantage.

The 2027 elections are expected to generate increased debate over electoral credibility, the independence of institutions, the use of technology and the enforcement of laws governing elections.

Obi said his administration would prioritise accountability and the rule of law, including holding those responsible for electoral offences to account if he becomes president.
