Residents of Nasarawa State have publicly set ablaze campaign posters of Governor Abdullahi Sule in a dramatic display of frustration over his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.**

Political tension is rising in Nasarawa State after a video emerged showing visibly angry residents destroying and burning campaign posters promoting Governor Abdullahi Sule's 2027 senatorial bid for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District.

The incident, believed to have occurred in parts of the state capital and surrounding areas, has drawn widespread attention on social media, with many interpreting it as a clear sign of growing public discontent with the governor's political moves as his second term winds down.

Governor Sule had earlier declared his intention to contest the Nasarawa North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections under the All Progressives Congress (APC). During the APC senatorial primaries held on May 18, 2026, Sule secured an overwhelming 47,393 votes against former Deputy Governor Silas Ali Agara, who polled 2,915 votes.

However, the governor's decision to seek a Senate seat while simultaneously influencing the governorship succession process has not gone down well with a section of residents and political stakeholders.

Governor Sule's endorsement of Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred successor for the governorship has drawn fierce opposition. No fewer than 30 governorship aspirants have kicked against the move, warning the outgoing governor to allow a free, fair and credible succession process instead of trying to foist his preferred candidate on the state.

The state chairman of the Labour Party, Alex Emmanuel-Ombugu, also faulted Governor Sule for choosing Wadada as his preferred successor, noting that the decision was not in the best interest of the electorate.

The burning of campaign posters is seen as a public expression of the frustration that has been simmering among sections of the Nasarawa population who feel sidelined by the governor's political calculations.

Political observers say the incident signals deepening cracks within the APC's ranks in the state. Analysts have warned that any perception of injustice within the APC could drive disaffected members and voters toward the opposition PDP, enhancing its prospects in 2027.

The Nasarawa State Government and the APC leadership are yet to issue an official reaction to the incident. Security agencies are also yet to confirm whether any arrests have been made in connection with the destruction of the campaign materials.

The development comes at a politically sensitive time, as the state prepares for what analysts describe as one of the most competitive electoral cycles in its history, with no fewer than 35 politicians from various parties having indicated interest in the governorship race ,a mix of political heavyweights, technocrats, academics and grassroots politicians.
