Anglican Bishop Urges Church Leaders to Speak Against Bad Governance
An Anglican bishop has urged church leaders to speak out against bad governance, saying religious leaders have a responsibility to defend the interests of citizens and hold political leaders accountable.
An Anglican bishop has called on church leaders to speak openly against bad governance and other practices that undermine the welfare and development of Nigerians.
The bishop said religious leaders should not remain silent when government policies and actions negatively affect the people, stressing that the church had an important role to play in promoting accountability and responsible leadership.
He urged Christian leaders to use their positions to educate citizens on their rights and responsibilities, while encouraging them to demand good governance from elected officials.
The cleric also warned against excessive closeness between religious leaders and politicians, saying such relationships could weaken the ability of the church to challenge wrongdoing and speak truth to power.
He said church leaders should remain independent and place the interests of the people above political affiliations or personal benefits.
The bishop called for greater commitment to addressing corruption, insecurity, poverty and other challenges confronting the country.
He also encouraged Christians to participate responsibly in the political process and support leaders who demonstrate integrity, competence and genuine concern for the welfare of citizens.
According to him, the church should continue to serve as a moral voice in society by challenging injustice and promoting values that strengthen national development.
He said Nigeria could make meaningful progress if political leaders were held accountable and citizens remained actively involved in demanding better governance.
