The Anambra State Government has issued a flood alert to residents following a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency that the state is among areas likely to experience above-normal flooding this year.

The government attributed the heightened risk partly to the state’s location within the Delta belt and assured residents that proactive measures were being taken to mitigate the impact of possible flooding.

The warning was contained in a joint statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, and the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi.

The government urged residents to take the NiMET forecast seriously throughout the rainy season and remain vigilant as rainfall intensifies.

It advised residents to avoid unnecessary movements during heavy downpours, whether on foot or by vehicle, and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.

Residents in flood-prone areas were also advised to relocate to safer locations where necessary and seek assistance promptly during emergencies.

The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while urging residents to cooperate with relevant authorities on flood preparedness and response.

The alert comes as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has identified Anambra among 15 states facing high riverine flood risks between September 19 and 25.

NiHSA identified Aguata, Anambra East, Anambra West, Anaocha, Awka North, Awka South and Ayamelum Local Government Areas as vulnerable, with 1,314 communities, 1,308 schools, 1,089 healthcare facilities, 280 markets, 610 religious buildings and 1,529 hectares of farmland exposed to possible flooding.

The agency advised residents in vulnerable communities, particularly those living on floodplains, to take precautionary measures and move to higher ground where necessary.
