Anambra State Launches Free Hypertension Screening Initiative for All Residents

The Anambra State Government has officially commenced a comprehensive public health campaign offering free hypertension screenings to residents across all twenty-one local government areas. Orchestrated by the State Ministry of Health, the intervention seeks to curb the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases and address the high number of undiagnosed cases of elevated blood pressure.

The state's Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, announced the deployment of the initiative during a primary healthcare evaluation tour in Awka. Under the operational directive, medical teams have been stationed at state-owned hospitals, primary healthcare clinics, and mobile health units to provide immediate, cost-free diagnostic checks to the public.

Medical experts have long classified hypertension as a "silent killer" because it frequently exhibits zero physical symptoms until severe internal damage has already occurred. The primary objective of this statewide mobilization is to catch early warning signs and immediately link affected individuals with sustainable treatment pathways before complications arise.

To ensure maximum public penetration, the Ministry of Health has integrated the diagnostic services into existing grassroots structures, making it easier for vulnerable demographics to receive care.

The structural components of the healthcare drive include:

  • Universal Testing Access: Free blood pressure checks, basic body mass index (BMI) assessments, and cardiovascular risk profiling are available to all residents regardless of socioeconomic status.
  • Immediate Treatment Referral: Individuals flagged with dangerously high readings are seamlessly registered into the state’s subsidized management programs to receive essential medication.
  • Community-Led Education: Public health officers are conducting widespread nutritional and lifestyle counseling sessions at local markets, town halls, and religious centers to promote preventative habits.

The aggressive healthcare rollout comes amidst a worrying spike in stroke and sudden cardiac arrest cases across the region, which health administrators attribute to prolonged stress, sedentary lifestyles, and poor dietary habits.

By removing the financial barrier to basic diagnostic services, the Anambra State Government aims to significantly reduce the strain on tertiary referral hospitals. This coordinated intervention directly aligns with Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo's overarching health policy, which prioritizes accessible, high-quality preventative medicine as a fundamental pillar of state development.
