‘America’s Election Shows Nigerians Can Change Direction of Government’ — Charly Boy
Veteran entertainer Charly Boy urges Nigerians to use their votes to hold political leaders accountable, drawing lessons from the 2026 US midterm elections.
Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for the country’s political future, saying the recent United States midterm elections demonstrate the power of citizens to change the direction of government through voting.
Charly Boy made the call in a post on his Instagram account on Wednesday, November 4, while reacting to the outcome of the US elections.
He said American voters had demonstrated that political power ultimately rests with the people, regardless of the strength of a political party or its structures.
“America just give us another reminder say no matter how powerful you be, no matter how much political structure you get behind you, the people still get a voice, and that voice fit change the direction of government,” he wrote.
The entertainer urged Nigerians to examine the records of politicians seeking their votes ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly their performance in areas such as security, job creation, the cost of living and opportunities for citizens.
He also cautioned voters against allowing gifts and temporary benefits from politicians to influence their electoral decisions.
“Nigerians must also remember that our votes are our voices,” he said, adding that democracy was not about distributing rice or other items to voters.
His comments followed the November 3 US midterm elections, in which the Democratic Party recorded significant victories against President Donald Trump’s Republican Party, including gains in both chambers of Congress.
The results have prompted discussions among Nigerian political figures and groups about electoral accountability and the role of voters in determining the direction of government.
The African Democratic Congress also urged Nigerians to draw lessons from the US elections, saying citizens should assess political leaders based on their performance and the impact of government policies on their lives.
Charly Boy’s message comes as political activities begin to intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with opposition parties and political figures calling for greater voter participation and accountability.
