America Labour Day: US Embassy Abuja, Lagos Consulate to Close Monday
US Mission Nigeria announces Monday closure of Abuja Embassy and Lagos Consulate for America’s Labour Day holiday observance.
The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of America’s Labour Day holiday.
The Mission made the announcement as part of its notice to members of the public and people seeking consular and other services at its facilities in Nigeria.
The closure will affect routine services at both the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos. Applicants and visitors who have appointments or intend to access services on Monday are expected to take note of the holiday arrangement and plan accordingly.
America’s Labour Day is observed annually on the first Monday of September. The federal holiday honours the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally regarded as a day to recognise the social and economic contributions of the workforce.
The temporary closure in Nigeria means routine activities at the two US diplomatic missions will resume after the holiday, subject to their normal working schedules.
The Embassy in Abuja handles a range of diplomatic and consular responsibilities, while the Consulate General in Lagos provides consular services to residents in Lagos and other parts of the country.
Members of the public requiring services from either mission have therefore been advised to take the closure into account when making travel arrangements, submitting applications or planning appointments.
The announcement is particularly relevant to visa applicants, American citizens seeking consular assistance, and individuals with scheduled engagements at the missions.
Emergency services for US citizens may continue to operate according to established procedures, while routine administrative and consular services will be affected by the holiday closure.
People planning to visit either location are advised to confirm operating arrangements before travelling and to reschedule appointments where necessary.
Normal services are expected to resume when the holiday observance ends, allowing the Embassy and Consulate to continue their diplomatic, consular and public-service activities in Nigeria.
The announcement gives residents advance notice of the one-day interruption and allows applicants to adjust plans before visiting either US mission.
