Alonso Starts Chelsea Reign With Victory Over Fulham
Xabi Alonso began his Chelsea tenure with a 3-2 Premier League victory over Fulham, inspired by Cole Palmer’s goal and assist.
Xabi Alonso made a winning start to his Chelsea managerial career as the Blues defeated London neighbours Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage in the Premier League.
Chelsea made a blistering start, taking the lead after just 31 seconds. Cole Palmer created the opening with a precise assist for Joao Pedro, who finished the move to give the visitors an early advantage.
Fulham responded strongly and eventually found an equaliser through teenage midfielder Josh King. The youngster produced a powerful effort that beat Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez at his near post, bringing the hosts back into the contest.
Chelsea regained the lead through record summer signing Morgan Rogers, who marked his Premier League debut with a goal. Rogers converted a cutback from fellow debutant Maxence Lacroix to restore Chelsea’s advantage.
Fulham continued to threaten, but Chelsea remained dangerous going forward, with Palmer once again proving decisive.
The England international added Chelsea’s third goal with a composed finish through Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s legs. The strike ultimately proved to be the winning goal and capped an impressive individual performance from the 24-year-old.
Palmer was at the centre of Chelsea’s attacking display throughout the match, combining creativity with composure in front of goal. His contribution provided Alonso with an early indication of the attacking influence he can have under the new manager.
Despite Fulham’s efforts to fight their way back into the match, Chelsea held on to secure all three points and give Alonso the perfect beginning to his Premier League reign.
The victory also provided encouragement for Chelsea following a busy summer transfer window, with several new arrivals immediately making an impact.
Rogers and Lacroix both made their league debuts, while Joao Pedro opened his account after being set up by Palmer inside the opening minute.
For Alonso, the victory represents an important first step as he takes charge of a Chelsea side expected to challenge strongly in the new campaign.
The Spaniard will now turn his attention to building consistency and cohesion within his squad as Chelsea seek to establish themselves among the Premier League’s leading teams.
