The campaign organisation of Senator Sharafadeen Alli has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over the state’s N8.5 billion Independent Power Project (IPP), alleging that the project failed to deliver electricity after billions of naira were spent on it.

In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Bisi Oladele, the organisation faulted Makinde’s explanation that inadequate electricity supply had contributed to the continued use of fuel-powered generators for streetlights in the state.

The campaign organisation said the Electricity Act 2023 had empowered states to generate, transmit and distribute electricity, adding that Oyo State had established its electricity regulatory commission and assumed regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

It alleged that the 11-megawatt IPP awarded to Elektron Energy was terminated by the state government late in 2025 after failing to generate electricity.

The organisation also compared Oyo’s project with electricity projects in other states, citing claimed generation capacities of 188 megawatts in Abia, 191 megawatts in Akwa Ibom and 8.6 megawatts in Ekiti.

It questioned why the project had not provided electricity for public infrastructure, including streetlights, the state secretariat in Agodi and health facilities.

The campaign organisation further criticised the continued use of diesel-powered generators for street lighting, alleging that several major roads remained dark and that the generators were being replaced frequently.

It said Oyo State needed a broader electricity strategy involving solar-powered streetlights, embedded generation, renewable energy, independent distribution networks and private-sector investment.

The organisation said these measures would form part of Alli’s proposed approach if he became governor, while urging the state government to account for the expenditure on the terminated project.
