Algerian Fans Attack Coach, Vandalise Stadium After Rangers Defeat
Angry MC Alger supporters reportedly assaulted a team official and damaged stadium seats after Enugu Rangers secured a 2-0 victory in Abeokuta.
Supporters of Algerian football club MC Alger allegedly attacked a member of their team’s coaching staff and vandalised stadium facilities following a 2-0 defeat to Enugu Rangers in the first leg of their CAF Champions League qualifying tie on Sunday.
The incident occurred at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State, after the Nigerian side secured a two-goal advantage in the second-round preliminary encounter.
Reports said hundreds of travelling Algerian supporters became angry after the final whistle, with some allegedly destroying seats in the stadium’s covered stands.
The unrest reportedly escalated when supporters followed members of the MC Alger delegation towards the players’ tunnel, where an assistant coach was allegedly assaulted. Nigerian police officers assigned to the visiting team intervened and helped protect the official from further harm.
Former Super Eagles striker Victor Ikpeba was also reportedly attacked by members of the Algerian delegation in the VVIP section while attempting to exchange pleasantries after the match.
Security operatives subsequently tightened security at the venue to prevent further disturbances.
On the pitch, Rangers secured the victory through two late goals. Kenneth Igboke converted a penalty in the 81st minute before James Emo added the second goal late in the match.
The encounter was also marked by disciplinary incidents, with players from both teams receiving red cards and an MC Alger official sent off.
The result gives Rangers a two-goal advantage ahead of the return leg scheduled for October 23 in Algiers, where the Nigerian club will seek to protect its lead and advance in the continental competition.
However, the scenes after the match have raised concerns about supporter conduct and stadium security during international club fixtures.
The reported incidents could attract scrutiny from football authorities, although any disciplinary action would depend on official match reports and subsequent investigations.
Rangers will now prepare for the return fixture, aware that their opponents will have the opportunity to overturn the deficit on home soil.
