Akwa Ibom Rep Trains 52 Councillors on Legislation
An Akwa Ibom federal lawmaker has organised legislative training for 52 councillors to strengthen lawmaking, oversight and grassroots governance.
A member of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom State has trained 52 councillors on legislative procedures, lawmaking and effective representation as part of efforts to strengthen governance at the grassroots level.
The training programme was designed to improve the capacity of the councillors to perform their constitutional responsibilities, including making local laws, conducting oversight and representing the interests of their communities.
The participants were exposed to the principles of legislative practice, committee operations, motions, resolutions and the processes involved in developing and passing bills.
The programme also focused on the relationship between local government legislative councils and executive arms, with emphasis on checks and balances, accountability and responsible public service.
The lawmaker said the initiative was intended to equip elected representatives with the knowledge and practical skills required to contribute meaningfully to local government administration.
He noted that effective grassroots governance depended not only on elected officials but also on their understanding of the legal and institutional responsibilities attached to their offices.
The training provided an opportunity for participants to discuss challenges confronting legislative councils and explore ways of improving their effectiveness in delivering democratic dividends to residents.
The lawmaker expressed hope that the knowledge gained would translate into improved legislative performance, stronger oversight and more responsive local government administration.
The programme forms part of broader efforts to build the capacity of grassroots political institutions and strengthen democratic governance in Akwa Ibom State.
