Ajayi Confirmed For Diamond League Final

Nigeria’s sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi has been confirmed to compete in the men’s 100 metres at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium.

Ajayi secured a global wildcard invitation after an impressive season that has established him among the leading sprinters.

The Nigerian record holder did not qualify for the final through the Diamond League points standings, but his world ranking made him eligible for a wildcard place.

The Diamond League rules allow meeting organisers to invite up to four global wildcard athletes, comprising two men and two women. Athletes must have competed in at least one Diamond League meeting during the season and meet at least one eligibility requirement in their chosen event.

Ajayi’s inclusion follows a remarkable campaign in which he has produced strong performances against elite sprinters.

The 21-year-old Nigerian won the men’s 100m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene and later triumphed at the London Diamond League meeting. At London, he clocked 9.84 seconds to equal his Nigerian national record and defeat Jamaica’s reigning world champion Oblique Seville.

Those victories helped establish Ajayi as one of the most exciting emerging sprint talents on the international circuit.

His qualification for the Brussels final gives him another opportunity to compete against an elite field.

The final will be held at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, where Ajayi is expected to face several leading 100m specialists.

His rise has been rapid. After making significant progress at the collegiate level, he has successfully transferred that form to international competition, producing fast times and challenging established names.
