Again, Gas Leak Hits Ogun Schools, Over 100 Students, Teachers Hospitalised

Panic erupted in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Friday after another suspected gas leak affected over 100 students and teachers across multiple schools, less than two months after a similar incident shook the town.

The latest incident reportedly impacted schools including Anglican Girls Grammar School, Obalende, and Our Lady of Apostle Secondary School located around Epe Garage, Ijebu Ode.

Affected students and staff were rushed to the Ogun State Hospital, Ijebu Ode, as well as several private medical facilities within the town for urgent treatment after many reportedly developed breathing difficulties and collapsed.

A video circulating on Facebook showed frightened students running out of one of the affected schools while teachers and residents struggled to assist victims, including students who fainted during the incident.

An eyewitness who spoke anonymously described the situation as more severe than the previous gas leak recorded in the town last month.

“I am right now at the Ogun State Hospital, Ijebu Ode and I can tell you that the previous gas leak which happened last month is a child’s play when compared to this one,” the eyewitness said.

“The whole hospital here is full and some parents have even taken their children to private hospitals for treatment.”

The incident caused widespread panic among parents and residents as families rushed to schools and hospitals in search of their children.

Although authorities were yet to officially confirm the exact cause of the leak, residents expressed growing fears over repeated environmental and industrial hazards in the area.

The recurring incidents have sparked renewed calls for urgent investigation by environmental and health authorities to determine the source of the leaks and prevent further occurrences.

Concerned residents also urged the Ogun State Government to strengthen monitoring of industrial activities and enforce safety regulations to protect schools and surrounding communities.

As of the time of filing this report, medical personnel were still attending to victims while emergency officials monitored the affected areas to ensure the safety of residents and students.
