Africa CDC Seeks Urgent Global Support After Nigeria Confirms First Ebola Case

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is seeking urgent international support to strengthen efforts to contain the ongoing Ebola outbreak across parts of Africa, following Nigeria’s confirmation of its first case in Abuja.

Nigeria’s Federal Government confirmed the infection on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after laboratory tests returned positive for a woman who recently arrived in the country on an international flight from Uganda.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the patient was admitted to a private hospital in the Federal Capital Territory, where she received medical attention before the diagnosis was confirmed. She is currently in isolation and receiving treatment.

Health authorities have identified 44 close contacts and commenced monitoring to determine whether other individuals may have been exposed to the virus. The contacts include healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and people who travelled with the woman.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the Federal Ministry of Health and the FCT Health Services Secretariat are coordinating efforts to prevent further transmission.

The confirmation comes amid a wider regional outbreak involving the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other African countries reporting infections. Kenya, for instance, confirmed nine cases as of October 20, according to its health authorities.

The regional spread has raised concerns about cross-border transmission and the capacity of health systems to respond effectively to infectious disease emergencies.

Africa CDC has previously called for coordinated continental action and international assistance to support surveillance, laboratory testing, infection prevention, case management and emergency response operations. The agency has also emphasised the importance of cooperation between governments, health institutions and international partners.

Nigeria has strengthened its disease surveillance and preparedness measures in response to the regional outbreak. Health authorities are urging hospitals nationwide to remain vigilant, promptly identify suspected cases and follow strict infection prevention and control procedures.

The government has also appealed to passengers who may have travelled with the infected woman, as well as other potentially exposed individuals, to cooperate with contact-tracing teams.

Ebola spreads primarily through direct contact with the blood and other body fluids of infected people who are showing symptoms, or through contaminated materials.

Authorities are urging Nigerians to remain calm, follow official public health guidance and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.

The coming days will be critical for monitoring identified contacts, strengthening surveillance and determining whether additional infections have occurred.
