Adeleke Begins Vacation, Orders Probe into Chieftaincy Disputes

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has commenced a vacation abroad while ordering an investigation into a disputed chieftaincy in Koka town, Obokun Local Government Area of the state.

The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, disclosed that Adeleke had left Nigeria for Europe, where he would spend time in the United Kingdom and other destinations during the break.

The vacation will also include medical examinations, according to the statement. Adeleke described the break as an opportunity to refresh and prepare himself for continued service to the people of Osun State.

Before commencing the vacation, the governor directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported appointment of another monarch for Koka Ilase.

The development has reportedly created a situation in which two individuals are being regarded as kings of the same community, raising concerns over the legitimacy of the competing claims.

Adeleke directed the ministry to review the circumstances surrounding the reported appointment and produce a report that would clarify the situation.

He also instructed the ministry to ensure that due process was followed in accordance with existing chieftaincy laws, regulations and traditional practices.

The governor said the government would stand by the law and the traditions governing the selection and recognition of traditional rulers in the state.

He further appealed to all parties and stakeholders involved in the dispute to remain calm while the investigation is conducted and the government works to resolve the matter.

The directive comes as Adeleke begins his vacation shortly after the conclusion of the recent Osun State governorship election, in which he secured another term in office.

The governor’s victory has not been challenged before the election tribunal, with the 21-day period for filing petitions against the result having elapsed without any petition being submitted.

Adeleke won the August 15 governorship election with 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 444,815 votes.

With the chieftaincy dispute now under review, the governor has directed the relevant ministry to establish the facts surrounding the competing claims and ensure that the outcome conforms with both statutory requirements and established tradition.

The investigation is expected to provide clarity on the rightful occupant of the Koka stool and help prevent further tension within the community.
