Adebayo Promises Solar Power on Every Nigerian Roof In 11 Months
SDP presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has promised to install 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian roof within 11 months if elected in 2027.
Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has promised to install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian roof within 11 months of assuming office if elected in the 2027 presidential election.
Adebayo made the pledge on Tuesday while speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he outlined his proposed approach to addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges.
He argued that Nigeria should reduce its reliance on conventional grid expansion, particularly in rural communities, and instead adopt decentralised energy solutions such as rooftop solar systems.
The SDP candidate said Nigeria should produce solar panels locally and train Nigerians to install and maintain the systems, creating jobs while expanding access to electricity.
Adebayo recalled that he made a similar recommendation during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2001, when he proposed establishing a solar-panel manufacturing plant through an agreement with countries such as China or India.
He also criticised the continued use of conventional power infrastructure for rural electrification, arguing that rooftop solar could provide a more practical alternative for many communities.
Adebayo said funding for the proposed solar initiative could be sourced from resources available at the local government level.
He projected that the decentralised solar clusters could generate up to 32,000 megawatts and reduce Nigerians’ dependence on the national grid, while creating employment through manufacturing, installation and maintenance.
The presidential candidate presented the proposal as part of his broader plan to improve electricity supply, strengthen domestic production and address unemployment if elected in 2027.
