Abuja Gas Explosion: Car Crash Sparks Inferno, Injures Driver, Damages Police Post
A car crashed into a gas retail station in Kubwa, triggering an explosion that injured its driver and damaged nearby structures.
An early morning gas explosion rocked the Liberty Junction area of Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday after a vehicle crashed into a gas retail station, triggering a fire that spread to nearby shops and a police traffic post.
The incident occurred at about 6:15am, sending thick smoke into the air as flames engulfed several structures around the station.
At least nine shops were affected by the fire, while a nearby container was also damaged. The vehicle involved in the crash was completely burnt, leaving only its charred frame after the flames were brought under control.
The driver and a young child were rescued from the vehicle following the crash. The driver sustained injuries and was taken for medical attention.
The force of the explosion also affected a police traffic post located near the junction. The makeshift structure was damaged and displaced, while debris was scattered across the surrounding area.
Part of a nearby drainage system was also damaged during the incident.
Emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene as the fire spread through the commercial area. Personnel from the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, National Emergency Management Agency and Nigeria Police worked together to contain the blaze.
Firefighters battled the flames to prevent them from spreading to other businesses and facilities around the busy junction.
The incident caused significant traffic congestion in the area as commuters, motorists, residents and passersby gathered around the scene. Emergency teams subsequently cordoned off affected areas while firefighting and recovery operations continued.
The cause of the crash was linked to the vehicle ramming into the gas retail station, resulting in the explosion and subsequent fire.
Authorities have yet to announce the full extent of the damage or provide further details about the condition of the injured driver.
The incident comes amid continued concerns about safety around gas and fuel facilities, particularly in densely populated commercial areas where accidents can quickly escalate into major emergencies.
