Abramovich Loses Third Bid to Overturn EU Sanctions
A top EU court has rejected Roman Abramovich’s third attempt to overturn sanctions imposed on him over Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The European Union’s General Court has rejected Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s third attempt to overturn sanctions imposed on him following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The former owner of Chelsea Football Club was placed on the EU’s asset-freeze and visa-ban list in 2022 over what the bloc described as his links to the Kremlin and his business interests in Russia.
Abramovich had argued that the EU was unfairly targeting him because of his public profile.
The General Court rejected his argument, ruling that his inclusion on the sanctions list was legally justified.
The court said Abramovich had stakes in metals companies Evraz and Norilsk Nickel, which it identified as providing a substantial source of revenue for the Russian government.
Abramovich has previously challenged the sanctions twice, with his earlier cases rejected in 2023 and 2025.
He is among several Russian businessmen who have sought to overturn EU sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine.
The latest ruling means Abramovich’s EU asset freeze and visa restrictions remain in place.
