Abiodun Says Governors Should Account for Subsidy Gains
Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun says state governors, rather than President Bola Tinubu, should account for the funds gained from petrol subsidy removal.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says state governors should explain how the financial gains from petrol subsidy removal have been utilised, rather than President Bola Tinubu.
Abiodun made the statement on Thursday at an All Progressives Congress rally at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.
Speaking in Yoruba, the governor said governors were better positioned to account for the funds because increased allocations to states had resulted from the removal of the subsidy.
He said the additional resources had been used by state governments to finance infrastructure and support programmes.
Abiodun cited the construction of airports, roads, schools and housing, as well as incentives for farmers, as examples of projects funded with increased government revenue.
His comments came amid renewed debate over the financial impact of the 2023 petrol subsidy removal, with opposition figures questioning how the additional revenue available to governments has been spent.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called for greater accountability over the funds and proposed a return to a form of fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027.
The Tinubu administration has maintained that ending the subsidy freed resources previously used to keep petrol prices artificially low.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said in August that subsidy removal had saved the federation N15.8tn between June 2023 and December 2025.
Abiodun also expressed confidence that the APC would defeat opposition parties in the 2027 elections.
