Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has ordered the immediate dissolution of all ad hoc committees of the lower chamber over their failure to conclude their assignments within the stipulated timeframe.

The directive was conveyed in a circular signed by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, and addressed to the chairmen and members of the affected committees.

According to the circular, the dissolution took effect from Friday, August 28, 2026, following earlier directives for the committees to complete their assignments and submit their reports.

The Clerk said only two ad hoc committees had sought and obtained extensions under Order 18, Rule 5 of the House Standing Orders, but the two-week extensions had since expired.

He reminded lawmakers that ad hoc committees were established for specific, time-bound mandates and were not intended to continue indefinitely beyond the period approved for their assignments.

Ibrahim also cited Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5, which places limits on the time available for committees to submit their reports.

He said the continued existence of the committees was no longer tenable after they exceeded the allotted period.

The affected committee chairmen were directed to submit all outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping.

Members of the dissolved committees were also directed to take note of the decision and ensure strict compliance.
