668,000 Meters Deployed, Installed on Customers’ Premises — FG
The Federal Government says 668,000 electricity meters have been deployed and installed at customers’ premises under its metering initiatives, as part of efforts to close Nigeria’s metering gap and improve transparency in electricity billing.
The Federal Government says 668,000 electricity meters have been deployed and installed at customers’ premises as part of ongoing efforts to improve metering across the country.
The development is part of the government’s broader power-sector reforms aimed at reducing estimated billing and ensuring that electricity consumers are charged based on actual consumption.
The government said the metering drive remained an important component of efforts to improve transparency in the electricity market and strengthen confidence among consumers.
The installation of meters is also expected to help electricity distribution companies obtain more accurate information on energy consumption while reducing disputes between consumers and service providers.
The government has continued to prioritise investment in the power sector, alongside reforms aimed at improving generation, transmission and distribution.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, recently said the Federal Government was targeting 6,500 megawatts of electricity by the end of 2026 and 8,000MW by the end of 2027, while acknowledging challenges in transmitting available power across the country.
He said the government’s objective was not merely to increase generation but to ensure that electricity supply became more reliable and sustainable for households and businesses.
The minister also said the government was pursuing a broader electricity strategy involving grid supply, embedded generation, renewable energy, mini-grids and energy storage.
The metering programme is therefore expected to complement these reforms by ensuring that improvements in electricity supply are matched by more efficient billing and distribution systems.
