2027: Wike PDP Faction Disowns Jonathan as Presidential Candidate
The Wike-aligned PDP faction denied plans to adopt Goodluck Jonathan as its 2027 presidential candidate, insisting Sandy Onor remains its nominee and urging security agencies to investigate the reports.
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has denied reports that it plans to adopt former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The faction described the reports as false, misleading and unauthorised.
In a statement issued on Friday, factional National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed called on security agencies to investigate the source of the reports and prosecute those responsible for spreading them.
The reaction followed an announcement by an Interim National Working Committee led by Tanimu Turaki, which reportedly planned a convention in Abuja to endorse Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate.
The Wike-aligned faction insisted that it had already concluded its primary elections and formally presented Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
“The party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled, approved, or endorsed by the leadership or any recognised organ of the Peoples Democratic Party,” the statement said.
The faction urged party members and the public to disregard the reports, arguing that they were designed to create confusion and political tension.
It also called on Jonathan to publicly distance himself from the alleged endorsement effort in order to protect both his reputation and the integrity of the democratic process.
According to the faction, all its primary elections, including the presidential primary, were conducted in line with electoral laws, party regulations and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
