2027: Why I Said Obi, Atiku Lack Capacity to Fix Nigeria — Baba-Ahmed

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has clarified his recent assertion that leading opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, lack the capacity to fix Nigeria’s challenges if elected president in 2027.

Speaking on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, Baba-Ahmed explained that his initial remarks were made in the interest of political equity, arguing that calling on President Bola Tinubu to step down without subjecting opposition contenders to equal scrutiny would grant them an unfair advantage.

Clarifying his earlier exchange during an interview with broadcaster Seun Okinbaloye, the former lawmaker noted that time constraints and live interview dynamics led him to confirm that his assessment extended to his 2023 running mate, Peter Obi.

Baba-Ahmed stated that his stance was intended to promote a level political playing field for all prospective presidential candidates, rather than selectively endorsing or campaigning for any single contender ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing the public reaction triggered by his comments, the former vice-presidential candidate questioned why observers reacted strongly to his independent political views, emphasizing that political actors routinely evaluate alliances and platform shifts.

Despite his critical assessment, Baba-Ahmed affirmed that his personal and political relationship with Peter Obi remains intact, describing him as a respected political figure while asserting his constitutional right as a citizen to offer objective commentary on national leadership.
