2027: Tinubu Delayed Tax Collection for Fear of Losing Election — Kwankwaso

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of delaying the collection of taxes because of fears that implementing the policy could undermine the ruling party’s chances in the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso made the allegation while criticising the National Assembly over its handling of the Federal Government’s tax reform legislation.

According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria published on Sunday, November 8, 2026, the former governor argued that the government’s decision to postpone tax collection was politically motivated rather than driven by concerns about the welfare of Nigerians.

“The bill has been passed into law, but the Federal Government is now afraid of losing the election. That is why it has delayed the collection,” Kwankwaso was quoted as saying.

He warned that Nigerians could face heavier tax enforcement if Tinubu secures another term in office, alleging that tax officials could begin visiting homes to collect taxes.

Kwankwaso also accused members of the National Assembly of failing to independently scrutinise government policies and adequately protect the interests of citizens.

He described the legislature as a rubber stamp for the executive, arguing that lawmakers had become too willing to approve proposals presented by the President without sufficiently considering their consequences.

The former governor further questioned the Federal Government’s continued borrowing despite revenue from taxation and the removal of the petrol subsidy.

He called on Nigerians to hold elected representatives accountable and carefully consider their choices in the forthcoming elections.

Kwankwaso’s comments come amid continuing public debate over the government’s tax reforms and their potential impact on households and businesses.

The Federal Government has presented the reforms as part of broader efforts to improve revenue administration and strengthen public finances. However, the changes have attracted criticism from opposition politicians and other stakeholders concerned about their timing and possible effects on citizens.

Kwankwaso’s claim that the delay was motivated by electoral considerations remains an allegation and should not be treated as an established explanation for the government’s decision.

The Federal Government’s position on the specific allegation was not included in the report.
