2027: Legal Luminary Tasks Journalists on Laws, Ethical Reporting
Yusuf Ali urges journalists to understand legal boundaries, verify reports and avoid language capable of causing anxiety ahead of 2027.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mallam Yusuf Ola-Olu Ali, has urged journalists to familiarise themselves with relevant laws and uphold ethical standards in their reporting ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ali gave the advice during a courtesy visit by members of the Correspondents’ Chapel to his office in Ilorin, where he discussed the responsibilities of politicians, citizens and media practitioners in the build-up to the elections.
The legal luminary stressed the importance of responsible journalism, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 polls.
He urged journalists to be careful with their choice of words and the tone of their reports, warning that irresponsible reporting could unnecessarily heighten anxiety and panic among members of the public.
Ali also encouraged media practitioners to understand the laws governing elections and political activities so that their reports would accurately reflect events and avoid misleading the public.
He said journalists occupy an important position in society and have a responsibility to provide citizens with credible information, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
The Senior Advocate also called on politicians to prioritise the interests of the people rather than personal ambitions.
According to him, political office holders should remember that they were elected to serve the people and should demonstrate patriotism and commitment to improving the lives of citizens.
He cautioned politicians against selfishness and actions capable of worsening the hardship faced by Nigerians, stressing that political power should be used for the benefit of the people.
Ali noted that the pursuit of political office should not be separated from responsibility and service, as those seeking power would ultimately be judged by their performance and treatment of the electorate.
He further urged citizens to remain patriotic and reject actions capable of creating unnecessary suffering or instability.
His comments come as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and aspirants already mobilising supporters across the country.
The legal luminary’s appeal adds to growing calls for responsible media coverage, fact-checking and adherence to professional standards as journalists prepare to report on increasingly intense political campaigns.
He urged journalists to remain conscious of the influence their reports can have on public opinion and national stability, particularly during the election period.
