2027: Govs’ Backing Gives Tinubu Edge Over Opposition — Presidency
Presidency says governors backing Tinubu have strengthened his political structure ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
The Presidency has said the growing number of state governors backing President Bola Tinubu has strengthened his political structure ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The position was disclosed as political parties and major political actors intensify preparations for the 2027 polls, with defections and emerging alliances reshaping the political landscape.
According to the Presidency, the support of governors gives Tinubu access to established political structures across several states and could strengthen the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the elections.
Several governors, including those who previously belonged to opposition parties, have publicly aligned themselves with the President in recent months.
The development has also triggered debate among opposition parties and political groups, particularly over the impact of the defections on Nigeria’s multiparty system.
The Progressive Governors’ Forum, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, recently declared that APC governors would not support any political alliance capable of undermining Tinubu’s re-election or weakening the party.
Uzodimma said the governors had agreed to work together to protect the interests of the APC and support its candidates across the different levels of government.
The Presidency’s position comes against the backdrop of growing political realignments ahead of 2027. Some opposition governors have moved towards the APC, while other politicians are forming coalitions aimed at challenging the ruling party.
The political movement has been particularly significant in the South-East, where several governors have expressed support for Tinubu. Recent reports indicate that five of the region’s six governors have aligned with the President, although Abia State Governor Alex Otti has maintained a more cautious position.
However, opposition groups have rejected the suggestion that governors’ support automatically translates into electoral support from voters. Critics have argued that voters ultimately determine election outcomes and that political endorsements do not necessarily guarantee votes.
The African Democratic Congress and other opposition actors have also criticised the growing number of defections to the APC, describing them as a challenge to political competition.
The 2027 presidential contest is therefore taking shape around competing political structures, alliances and voter mobilisation, with the APC seeking to consolidate its nationwide organisation while opposition parties work to build a coordinated challenge.
The Presidency’s latest assessment presents governors’ backing as a significant organisational factor, while the opposition continues to pursue alternative alliances and strategies ahead of the elections.
